This style of gardening, also known colloquially as the Zen garden, is one of the best-known forms of the Japanese garden. Here, water is completely absent and yet the gravel or sand takes on the position and shape of the water. Raking the gravel and contemplating it are considered part of the meditation.
The Kare-san-sui offered here can be used either as part of a tabletop landscape or as a small, real Zen garden for the desk.
