On the Southeast Asian mainland, the distribution area of the humpback gongs extends in the east via Thailand, Laos and Cambodia to the minority peoples of the Vietnamese mountainous region. Among the North Vietnamese Mường, gongs represent the bride's most valuable dowry and correspond to the exchange value of a water buffalo or a cow. Gongs are found in roughly the same area as stilt houses, while the majority Vietnamese and Chinese traditionally build brick houses on the ground.
